Lefkimmi
The "Lady of the South" as Lefkimmi is called, is built on a fertile plain with 400 years old olive plantations.
In the middle of the picturesque villages, the river Potami divides Lefkimmi into two parts. Taverns with local traditional cuisine, as well as traditional cafes and cafeterias, can be found along both sides of the river. If you follow the river by walking, (about one kilometer), you will reach the beach of Bouka. A large beach that is also preferred by the locals for swimming and enjoying meze.
Taking a tour of the districts of Lefkimmi, you will notice many elements of its long history. The settlement of Rigglades, where the house is located, dates back to Byzantine times.
In Lefkimmi you will also see some historical monasteries and churches, such as the monastery of the "Lady of Angels" from 1968, which was built by the sons of Kapodistrias. It is worth a visit in Melikia, a 15th-century village, the church of Agios Isaurus, with rare 16th-century frescoes.
Nature lovers can enjoy the forest of two hundred and fifty acres located at the south end, the Cape of Arkoudila. There is the monastery of Panagia, built in 1700, which reminds of a medieval castle with its battlements, walls, and secret hatches.
And of course do not miss to make a stop, or a full-day visit, to the protected -by the Nature Convention- lagoon of Korissia. The hydro biotope is home to more than one hundred and twenty different species of birds and regular visitors are flamingos and cormorants. In front of the lake, where the turquoise of the Ionian Sea separates from the almost still turquoise waters of the lake, is the wonderful sandy beach of Halikouna. Crossing its wooden bridge, you enter an enchanting landscape: a unique forest of small cedars and 14 species of orchids that grow there, as well as white lilies. The huge red sand dunes, reminding of the Sahara desert, reach as far as the famous beach of Issos.
Lefkimmi has its own port and the distance from the house is less than 10 minutes. It is directly connected to Igoumenitsa and Paxos.
